Story Behind the Song
This was a tuff one to record, They didnt know how to play it. But With a little practice, Turned out to be a masterpiece, Again. Took Joel several takes, Perhaps In the thousands.
Lyrics
FIRST IMPRESSION - Needs And Freedoms Taken Away (lyrics)
NAFTA was supposed to be the savior
It was supposed to help all the poor citizens
Providing free trade across North America
The econmy would thrive and poverty would disappear
But now the only benefactors of this have been the rich (getting richer still) while the
Poor, forced into this mess, have suffered all the while
In Mexico, the ejido system is threatened by the private share holders
Buying out the land and forcing the former owners into slave labour
Droping wages, increasing their hours, working through siesta
The only benefactors are the upper class, NAFTA is a molester
Education budgets are cut down by leaders more concerned with lax labour laws
And accumulating money for armaments to help american in all their wars
The masses are suffering to help the few
People are treated like slaves for the benefit of me and you
The North American Free Trade Agreement
Is only about Needs And Freedoms Taken Away
World leaders insist that privatization of all resources is mandatory
You must comply with the Structural Adjustment Program set up by the Global Army (U.N.)
Make deep cuts into social spending forget about health education and housing
Focus your efforts on export production, forget that your citizens are starving
The masses are suffering to help the few
People are treated like slaves for the benefit of me and you
The North American Free Trade Agreement
Is only about Needs And Freedoms Taken Away
