Story Behind the Song
A good friend of a good friend of mine, Alan, an accomplished pilot, who I had the pleasure of meeting only a couple of times, was killed when he crashed over the deserts of California. It was a dark night and his altimeter was slightly off. Like so many of us he was trying to impress a girl. He had taken her for a ride in the love of his life, a single engine, silver Globe Swift ... his wing tip caught the ground as he buzzed camp.
This song has always been very special to me. Although written in August of '99 I was never satisfied with the final production. With five years of recording under my belt I decided to make it my engineering showcase. My goal was to make this song as complex and as meaningful as I possibly could. I feel my efforts were well founded.
Alan, bordering on genius, was an incredible, unique and very special human being. He had a heart the size of Mount Rushmore. He also had the habit of helping others even at the cost of his own well being. For some reason he always wore socks that didn't match ... you might say he was a bit eccentric. We all miss you ... you were one of a kind.
Alan, may your journey be blessed.
Lyrics
VERSE 1:
Sunrise another mornin'
Haven't seen your face in so long
People scurry as the earth turns
They're unaware that you're gone
It seems like just the other day
That you were here by my side
Well some of us leave early
But it's the good ones that fly
CHORUS:
Fly away on silver wings
Your work here is done
They say you live forever
Where the earth meets the sun
I don't know what lies ahead for me
But I'll carry your name
And know the lives you touched
Will never be the same ...
VERSE 2:
Three O'clock in the morning
I call out your name
Then I sit here in silence
Rememberin' the pain
An occasional glimpse of genius
With un-matching socks
You always gave unselfishly
While others just talked
CHORUS:
BRIDGE:
Ya know I never wanted to see you go
But it comforts me 'cause I know
When it came your time to fly away
It'd be on silver wings ...
So fly ...
CHORUS:
