This song describes our many emotions stirred by the emptiness left at the World Trade Center site...
Credits: Written and performed by Don Mason

    Story Behind the Song
This song was originally written one week after Sept 11. The lyrical content was changed recently as the ruins of the WTC were cleared, to reflect on the emptiness that exists at the site and in all our hearts.

    Lyrics
We watched a blue sky turn to darkness
As the shadows fell on the land one day
Mourning clouds rained on the nation
And washed the bright sunshine away

And as we learned more of the horror
The pain we felt made it so clear
That we would know a new horizon
    Of what humanity must bear

    CHORUS:
Where are the buildings rising to the sky?
There's still a shadow on the ground
And where are the people that we loved so much?
All we have lost cannot be found

We should recall the tale of Job now
Who kept his faith through deep despair
Somehow the questions lead to answers
But we must listen or we won't hear

Still we feel confused and helpless
Although the ruins are swept away
All we have left is emptiness
In the aftermath of the darkest day

    (repeat chorus)

The world keeps turning and we wonder
How can we lift our hearts once more?
Where will we find ourselves tomorrow?
Where can we find all we have lost?
