Story Behind the Song
I accompanied my wife to a training session she was taking for Women of Substance which runs a national hotline for abused women. The thought came to me that they needed a song to promote awareness of the hotline.
Lyrics
CHORUS
Oh, Black and Blue Lady, your heart has been crushed,
Your dreams have been shattered and turned into dust
Black and Blue Lady, don’t think you’re alone
Others have been there, so pick up the phone
She’s a Black and Blue Lady, her spirit’s been crushed
She gave her heart to one she thought she could trust
He told her he’d love her, till death did they part
But he was an abuser and broke more than her heart
Christian or Moslem, Hindu or Jew
No man has a right to molest you
Because God is Love and He’s always the same
It can’t be God’s will if you’re living in shame
Oh, Black and Blue Lady, don’t give up on the Truth
That you’re made in God’s image and his Son died for you
His blood is still precious to our Father above
Who still feels the pain returned for His Love
Black and Blue Lady, you’re not alone
Many before you have picked up a phone
By dialing a number and sharing their grief
They started a journey to worth and relief
Though your ego is shattered and your bones may be broke
And you’re living in shadows despairing of hope
Black and Blue Lady, though you’re living in shame
Don’t be afraid to tell us your name
Black and Blue Lady dial 1 866
86 abuse for a way to exit
Find hope and a vision with one toll free call
And know that God loves you and will help you walk tall
