Story Behind the Song
This version of The Witness was used on the CD, Under The Table, because of the crowd's reaction. Frozen Feet was the opening act for America when this was recorded and rarely does an opening act command total silence from the audience.
Lyrics
It was a cool September morning
When I saw her, by the sea
She had long dark hair and a flowered dress
And she held onto the Bible in her hands
You know the mood outside was peaceful
And I noticed that there was noone else around
So I held back all of my intentions
And I quickly made my place upon the ground
I just watched her from a distance
Wondering how silence could be anybody's friend
And how was I to know I would become
The witness upon her journey's end
CHORUS
How does anyone find the answers anymore?
Why is it so hard to find a friend?
You know this old world, it's gone to pieces
We need the whole human race to help it mend
These are my thoughts, my inspirations
In hopes that someday we may all understand
You leave behind your judgements, your convictions
And you will find it's so much easier to stand
No, I never got up to find her
That woman I saw down by the sea
I watched the sun set on the horizon
And I thought that this was somehow meant to be
You know late at night I think of her
And I wonder what took her smile away
All in all I hope it's safe to say
Though her life had ended, mine began that day
CHORUS
You will find it's so much easier to stand
