    Story Behind the Song
Recorded, Mixed, and Mastered by Luke Harper at Two Fish Studios in January and February of 2003. Produced by Luke Harper and The Common Place.

    Lyrics
    smokestacks sound like cigarettes
frame the night and strafe across the open sky

he stares at his breath as it hangs still
and tries not to hear the quiet
swings his legs and wonders where
    the virtue lies in silence

and he sees the concrete gutters burn with shades of fall
and blinks away the insistence of his fear its just another year

he feels the current tugging strong on him today
another melancholy step by step routine to tame
the part of him that battles is still longing to be free
and I can almost see that part of me

bangs his wrists to mediate the rain
    exhales and fogs a window
traces himself a brand new new name
    that time will tell

"now I want it back," he says to the street
the glass and rocks to his reflected face
then listens to the echo lifts
    his collar to the cold

and he sees the concrete gutters burn with shades of fall
sees the smokestacks etching out a call
    to walk away from fear

and though the answers drift away on the cold air
dissolve on the horizon and leave
    little traces of their
promise this will pass he understands them vividly
and I can almost see that part of me

we all need our troubles all our meager hopes and dreams
they serve as a reminder that its all in our heads
we forget the irony the way we learn to crawl
and i can almost see that part of me
