Story Behind the Song
The piece was performed with the score distributed on a dozen stands around the trumpet player in the pit of the piano so that the piece begins with the trumpet bell pointing away from the audience and into the body of the piano. Gradually the player turns around to be playing towards the audience at the piece’s climax and then gradually returns to play away from the audience and into the piano. This creates an overall dramatic crescendo and diminuendo effect and also creates the effect of sympathetic vibrations of the piano strings. This piece also makes use of ornamental quarter-tones and flutter-tonguing.
