Story Behind the Song
Mike Bellefeuille wrote the song lyrics and came up with the basic arrangement including the spoken-word style, pauses, and guitar solo placement. Neal Munn and Jay Trayne came up with the guitar chords and Neal worked out the guitar solo. Eric Carvill came up with the drum part in a jam session only hours before the band first performed the song at the Well on March 8, 2003.
Lyrics
brown eyes and long black hair
but Lydia never cares
she's got a European sense of sophistication
but you know she's an all-American girl
she's living in her pastel world
but Lydia, I hope you know, I love you
soft smile and bright white teeth
oh yeah, she puts my mind at ease
well, you know she is the only girl I ever loved
but she never knew until now
which is why I thought I really oughtta say
oh, Lydia, you know it's true: I love you
we could lay in the long green grass
just to let the hours pass
but I'd be perfectly content just to hear you say that you reciprocate my love
but she never wore her heart on her sleeve
but here's something even she'll believe:
now, Lydia, I hope you know by now, I hope you know, I love you
