Story Behind the Song
So I was at Mechina 2002 and I was hangin out with this girl Dusty from Seattle. We were getting to know eachother and she mentioned that she wrote song lyrics, but wasn't good at writing music. I said, "that's funny, because I write music, but I'm not very good at writing lyrics." She sent me lyrics when we got back to our home towns, and I just played. Out of completely nowhere, the song spurted out and I quickly recorded it so I would have it to play for her.
I don't know if the song is written for anyone specific, or if anyone is specifically addressed in the song. I think it's meant to just be advise to the listener. Sometimes, it's just better to trust yourself instead.
Lyrics
She's the type who'll look at you once in a minute
take your heart and never return it
she's the one with green eyes and the smile
you'll feel alive, at least for a while
but the problem with girls like her is this
she finds things that are easy to part with
don't tell yourself you'll make her change
she'll find some pretty thing,
your height, your age
and you'll join the recovering addicts
just another flavor she tried and dismissed
believe in actions, words mean lies
careless phrases when all you need are my eyes
you know who's real, who's playing with your head
stop living with your brain,
and trust yourself instead
he always tried to play it off
to be the man to be enough
but then he was played by the wrong toy
he was a naughty little boy
and that girl who dismissed with the flip of her hand
fliped him off her finger like a grain of sand
he didn't follow, didn't try to pursue
just told the story to someone who knew
when you lose control over your mind
and follow your heart,
you can't try to rewind
believe in actions, words mean lies
careless phrases when all you need are my eyes
you know who's real, who's playing with your head
stop living with your brain,
and trust yourself instead
if i told you the moonlight reflects in your eyes
how your hair shimmers silver in the light of sunrise
if i hold your hand and help you see
what you mean to the world and to me
would you understand the truths of my hands
but understand that i make no demands
a man once said after he lost his girl
her actions defined her, she never said a word
but i want my actions to say to you
that this is love and i'm here for you
believe in actions, words mean lies
careless phrases when all you need are my eyes
you know who's real, who's playing with your head
stop living with your brain,
and trust yourself instead
