This song speaks eloquently to a mostly unheard group thrown into the current state of affairs in the world - It contains the anguish of mothers who wonder if there could be a better way than war to solve our differences. Mothers who wonder if their sons will come home to them, and pray for that every night. No matter your position on the potential war in Iraq in 2003, on current events, and on war in general, this song demands listening.

    Story Behind the Song
    Brigitte Hallert:

"I wrote this song at the beginning of the Gulf War. I was in agony thinking about all the mothers from all the different countries who were crying at night for having to let their sons go to war. There can never be a good war as far as I am concerned. Dialogue for peace is the only way to solve our universal problems."

    Lyrics
My child is so small, just seven years old,
I raise him to be non-racist and bold,
I tell him that fighting is so wrong to do,
He looks at me, the bringer of truth.

Hey Hey Hey! What are you looking at me for?
Hey Hey Hey, I didn't want this war!
Killing and bloodshed never make sense,
It's better to chose a peaceful defense.

My son, he is now fourteen years old,
He thinks about what I once told,
About right and wrong and what to stand for,
I never taught him to look for war.

My son is now 18 years old,
He had to go to fight the foe -
Kill the enemy he has never seen,
Another boy with a mother just like me.

    And he says:

Hey Hey Hey, What are you looking at me for?
Hey, I didn't want this war.
I'm just a soldier fighting for my land,
Putting my life in the President's Hand.
I'm just a soldier fighting for my land,
Putting my life in the President's Hand.

My son, he is gone - he never grew old.
He was a young a boy, courageous and bold.
Killed by the enemy he had never seen,
Another boy with a mother just like me.

Hey, Hey, Hey, What are you looking at me for?
Hey, I didn't want this war!
    I had a son I'll never know,
He had to go to fight the foe.
Killing and bloodshed never makes sense,
It's better to choose a peaceful defense.
Killing and bloodshed never makes sense,
It's better to choose a peaceful defense.
