Story Behind the Song
A revelation about life that I have received is that being lonely has a lot more to do with being misunderstood than being alone. By that measuring stick, Christ was (in strictly human terms) very much lonely.
Lyrics
Alone
You came at first as a little child;
You rested in the manger,
Nestled in Your mother's smile.
The world found no room,
When you laid Your glory down;
Let my heart be Your rest, Lord,
I'll make room for You now.
You taught in our market,
You healed all our sick;
We never understood You,
Thought that there must be some trick.
When You tried to explain,
We all turned away.
Come to my heart, Lord,
I wanna learn what You say.
And when I trace your footsteps,
You were often alone.
The birds have the treetops,
The foxes have their holes;
But Son of God,
You were unknown.
My heart isn't much, Lord,
Won't you please call it home.
You prayed for Your enemies;
You prayed for Your friends.
I found You in the garden,
All alone at the end.
While the cross stood before,
Disciples slept upon the ground.
God help me, Jesus; I wanna pray with you now!
I find it isn't hard,
When I'm on my own;
'Cause I have my Saviour's promise:
I'm never alone!
Yeah, God, you went homeless,
To give the world a home,
There'll always be room, Lord,
Here in my heart for you!
