Funky guitar driven pop tune in the style of artists like Lenny Kravitz, or Mid 60s Rolling Stones. Very raw but it always gets the crowd going at live gigs. |

Story Behind the Song
there is a lot that can be said for a basic 12 bar style Rock riff. Prisoner is a funky 12 bar with a basic turnaround added to it in A and it is probaly the easiest song I have ever written.
I was out rollerblading and this riff just kept repeating in my head. By the time I had completed the laps around the river... I had a full song playing over and over, so I never even put pen to paper, it just stuck with me.
I recorded it that night in the spare room at my Perth home, and my neighbours must have loved me, coz I had my old Marshall amp cranked till around 4am. I just sat there experimenting with different ideas for sounds and licks / riffs, but kept going back to the basic idea as you hear it here.
Everything was done in single takes (I hate punching in and out....) and the only thing which was added was the heavily reverberated Drum roll after the first verse, which I did to give it more of a live stadium type sound.
The first time I performed it live I was at an Acoustic jam night and no-one was really getting any crowd response (including me). Then I fired into Prisoner and the whole place started jumping, I had the floor packed out within 1 verse, and I can't remember ever seeing a better response from a completely unknown song at a dead gig. That inspired me to write another verse which I never recorded but I now play live.
Lyrics
Poison Ivy running, Through my vains.
Each time I see you girl, you kick my heart around again.
Said things were different but you're, still the same.
You got the scruples of a viper. My freedom is the price I paid.
Oh oh for loving you.
I'm a prisoner of my heart.
Ain't nothing I can do.
Used to hold my head high, then I caught this love disease.
Now in my reflection, there's a stranger watching me.
Don't matter how you treat me, been down this road before.
When your heart's in chains, you can't break free.
Can't seem to make it out that door.
Oh oh for loving you.
I'm a prisoner of my heart now baby.
Ain't nothing that I can do.
Oh oh, I curse myself for loving you.
Can't seem to make it out that door.
And there's nothing that I can do.
Roller coaster running through my vains.
Less ups than downs girl, but with you it's gonna be that way.
You say you're trying but you're still the same.
You've got the scruples of an ally cat.
Insanity's the price I paid.
Oh oh, for loving you.
I'm a prisoner of my heart.
Ain't nothin that I can do.
Oh oh I curse my self for loving you.
You got the scruples of an alley cat.
Ain't nothin I can do.
(Extra Verse / Not recorded used live only)
I was hopelessly addicted since I first laid eyes on you.
Doctor says it's pointless, Says he just can't find a cure.
Got these shackles 'round, Feels like a freight train in my head.
Coz the way you keep mis-treating me. I think I'm better dead.
