From the new album "Empty Into White." The song is called "Allu Mari" (which in Italian means "to the sea"), and recalls with sorrow and reverence the infamous BURNING TIMES of the Middle Ages; Unto Ashes honor the memory of the many thousand witches who were persecuted and killed during this time. It is a remarkable fact that during the Inquisition some witches chose to throw themselves into the sea rather than allow themselves to be burned at the stake. The chorus from "Allu Mari" is believed to have created by 16th-century Italian witches; the chorus has been passed down from generation to generation. The verses of "Allu Mari" were written by leading feminist historian Catherine Madsen, who has kindly allowed Unto Ashes to utilize them in this profound piece of music. The instrumentation includes acoustic and electric guitars, bewitching male and female vocals, and ocean sounds.

    Story Behind the Song
Michael Laird: I first saw the words to Allu Mari in a songbook at a friend's house; I was amazed by the power of these words - and yet there was no author listed - there wasn't even any music (!) - just words. So I decided to make up some of my own to go with this astonishly beautiful poem. It was effortless - the words seemed to leap off the page. It was FAR more difficult finding out who the author of the poem was. Thankfully I was able to locate Catherine Madsen, who kindly allowed Unto Ashes to play our version of the song over the telephone for her. We were honored by her response, which was that she loved it, and was genuinely moved by it.

    Lyrics
To the sea, to the sea, let me follow
To save me from burning and heal my sorrow
Take the way of sand and water...
    Allu mari...

Down the dunes are sister and stranger
The wicked women dance in their danger
    Craving the blessing together...
    Allu mari...

    Allu mari, mi portati
    Se voleti che me sanati
    Allu mari, alla via
    Cosi m'ama la donna mia
    Allu mari, allu mari
    Mentre campo t'aggio amari

So in love does my lady enjoy me
That death by drowning cannot destroy me
Life on the tide will run before me...
    Allu mari...

    Allu mari, mi portati
    Se voleti che me sanati
    Allu mari, alla via
    Cosi m'ama la donna mia
    Allu mari, allu mari
    Mentre campo t'aggio amari
