Story Behind the Song
The verses of this song are about an ex-girlfriend, of course. We always thought Tom got the idea backwards for the chorus lyric... But it makes sense now, I think.
Lyrics
And when we sat around outside, smoked our cigarettes at night. All the world would just seem to disappear, seem to vanish in the clear. And then you left me all alone, you lied and told me you're not home. Memories I'll have of days back then, when we were so cool. (And then I saw you standing there. Never thought I'd see you there.) You can change the mileage, but you cannot change the girl. Nowadays when I think about the past, I wonder why we didn't last. Did you think I'd run around again? follow you and what was then? You stopped treating me so well, it seems that out of love you fell. I meant no more to you than dirt, how you treated me. You can change the mileage, but you cannot change the world.
