Written on the eve of war with Saddam Hussein and inspired by radio interviews with parents of U.S. soldiers
CD: Railroad Blessing   Label: Spiral Records
    Credits: Sam Payne--Piano and Vocals

    Story Behind the Song
A war song, inspired by the radio broadcast of the Town Hall Meeting in
Columbus, Ohio, in 1998, at which the government presented its plans for war
against Sadam Hussein to a waiting nation. parents of Ohio soldiers stood
up and awkwardly expressed their patriotism, that sounded more like
impassioned pleas that the nation treat carefully the young lives that had
    been entrusted to it.

    Lyrics
There's a green stretch of field tucked away in the heart
    of this land
There's a boy there who loves a bright lady as deep as he can
And she lets him walk long in her valleys
And she lets him ride high on her wing
In the face of the storm, in her hand he's as warm as anything

I was there on the morning he fell through the gate from above
I waited up late on the night when he first fell in love
And I taught him to treasure the water
And I taught him to furrow the land
And I watched the foe yield on a far different field
While his mother she cried to the sound of the band

And so long, send in my Ohio boy
    Stand him wide-eyed and trembling
    Between you and the dark
But won't you hang your eyes low
As you watch that boy go
I don't know what you want him to be
But bring my Ohio son home to me

Now we're pulling the canvas on up over late winter hay
And his blue eyes are on the horizon for a flicker of grey
'Cause there's a thunderhead high in the desert
There's a clock ticking low on the wall
And the gutters are clean here inside the machine
Send a dancer to go get that hard rain to fall

And so long, send in my Ohio boy
    Stand him wide-eyed and trembling
    Between you and the dark
But won't you hang your eyes low
As you watch that boy go
I don't know what you want him to be
But bring my Ohio son home to me
