Story Behind the Song
This was inspired by the young uns at Out Youth Austin, a gay and lesbian youth group of the bravest folks we've ever met.
The KKK wanted to adopt a mile of highway in Missouri. (Naturally, folks were afraid they'd only pick up white trash.) No problem. The Department of Transportation, thinking outside the box, wisely changed the name to the Rosa Parks Highway.
Lyrics
CHORUS:
Sticks and stones may break your bones
But words can break your heart
Fools can be so cruel
But fools are not so smart
Remember you’re rubber
Remember they’re glue
It’s not what they call you
It’s what you answer to
In the lunchroom, the locker room, the restroom, or the hall
Listen, you can hear the names they call.
But the classroom’s not the last room where you’ll hear ridicule
Check the executive washroom or the typing poolRosa Parks, Harvey Milk, Karen Silkwood, Ryan White
Showed us you can take two wrongs and do what’s right
Ah, but what if it’s human nature to wanna be one up
I’ll just try to remember it’s more fun to share my cup
Then after supper we’ll find a thesaurus and take it down off of the shelf
Open up, realize you can make a name for yourself.
