An almost deserted bar in a small town, the jukebox has just run out of its last quarter, the bartender polishes glasses in anticipation of the next day's business... everbeen there? Someone found out that people of the opposite sex actually look (subjectively) more attractive with every hour as the evening progresses. The result: noone will ever look any better than at closing time! And there is no better chance of setting up a one-night stand than in those few precious moments between the lastdrink and the time the bar closes its doors for the night. This song is about lonely people looking for company in a rather conventional way - and what may or maynot become of such a small-town adventure. This is slow waltz with plenty of time between lines for you to develop your own interpretation.

    Lyrics
Someone turns down the music just as the glasses run dry
The man at the bar says, "It's just about time"
A strange kind of yearning is making the rounds
Hungry souls longing for a love never found

He sits at the table leaned over his drink
He acts like he's listening but he needs time to think
She's talking about a movie she saw at home in bed
In her mind she's imagining how the evening will end

    They're running from loneliness
Even though it's their only friend
Two hearts are beating for a pillow to rest
Even though they know this can't last

The bartender watches as he reaches for his hand
Already he can guess how this one will end
Tonight they'll leave lovers and head for her place
Maybe a month or two later she won't remember his face

It's an old, familiar story that's told in every town
About the hopes inspired by a bar closing down
90 times in a hundred when love arrives it's still-born
But then there's the miracle and it lives to become more

    They're running from loneliness
Even though it's their only friend
Two hearts are beating for a pillow to rest
Hoping against hope that this will last
