Story Behind the Song
One summer day in 1999 I got inspired by some Phillip Glass underscore I had been listening too - he created these fascinating compositions for the old Dracula which is performed by the Kronos Quartet and available on CD. Anyway, I have always enjoyed the stark notes and repetition that Glass pioneered and mastered and decided to slap that idea on top of my little vocal ditty. John was MOVED.....he activated his Wonder-Twin Reverb powers and laid out a classic John Bright Guitar Moment at the end of this song - you will want to give that your full attention.
But this song does have a past:
U BAS used to be a GUSH filler back in the Fais Do Do, Luna Park days.....I think it was Velvet Chain’s Jeff Stacey that complained about it saying "You guys would be good if Camille would lay off the pissed off feminist songs." But Jeff never could resist us - even when we got feminist, which this song really is not.
Anyway, in the Gush days this was just a simple two-part harmony for female voices to be done a-cappella. We always knew it deserved to rock, but never really put our minds to it...Once we tried recording it on an early morning whim with Jim Wirt, but scared ourselves silly on the playback!!!! Hopefully that 2 inch will never surface.
Lyrics
U Bastard
Camille Smith
Every day
I try hard to let you go, You bastard
And even hate, if I let it
Take me over
Can’t this love kill.
(Twice)
CHORUS:
And I hold myself responsible
I shoulda listened to my Mama
I knew I loved you more than I was loved
(Twice)
I really thought
That if I opened all my doors and windows
That the love I yearned for
would pour on me like a fog.
(Twice)
