Story Behind the Song
This tune was born back in college, and was originally a collaboration between myself and good friend and fellow musician (guitarist/cellist) Craig Wesbrook, with whom I wrote the lyrics. The music was straight-up expressive energy, inspired by the style of Melissa Etheridge, and Craig found in that the inspiration for the lyrics: the desire to forget the trying times of the present and hit the road.
Later, when I began playing solo shows in 1996, Wheels became something of a North trademark tune. When Markus started playing bass with me, he adapted an old cello part I'd written for Craig to seed the bassline. By the time Tom came on board in 1998, recording Wheels was a must, and it was the first song recorded for the Revolutions CD.
The recording here involved a scratch take with the whole band in the studio at once. From there, re-takes of sections of guitar and bass followed, as well as the addition of several percussion parts. Finally, vocals were redone for the whole tune. Between the original demo version and the CD version, a few more percussion changes and a new mixdown
took place.
