Story Behind the Song
Track number 7 of Messina Drive. Writing it was a blur. It took about three days from concept to creation, but the tweaking has taken a great deal longer.
Lyrics
If the heights try to tempt me down
twirling me to the frozen ground,
spinning me like an oak seed, gone...
Carry me. I want you to know.
If my fall confounds me spinning round,
will the brown grass save me from the ground?
If I taste the teeth of a winter's wind
stabbing me through my grade-school skin
where will I find a cover or a coat
to fight the chill that spills out
from within?
If their laughter bites me with their jaws,
how can I help but fight back through my flaws? I want you to know.
I want you to know that if I held my breath
I can feel me there, held as close as death.
The scars do not show like a talcum white
like on my skin, marking am motion's bite.
Since these echoed school sounds scare me so
can't you see it stabs me when we go?
Who'd believe me when I told my day,
since I was only in the grown-up's way.
How could I stop this sense of losing grace
when they smashed my nose to spite my face?
Who will want to hold and hear my cries
when I fight closeness 'till it dies?
I want you to know.
I want you to know that if I held my breath
I can feel me there, held as close as death.
These scars do not show like a talcum white
line in my skin, marking a motion's bite.
Now I'm calm as air. I'm silent like a prayer.
There's nothing like the scorn of children.
I want you to know now those days are gone
come see the shaken child I built a man upon.
I want you to know.
If the heights try to tempt me down.
Carry me.
