Story Behind the Song
Gryphon: I wrote this in Sacramento in 1987. (I hated Sacramento and spent most of my time writing songs that summer.)
In this installment, our hero the Spelologist ventures further into the cave and comes upon a blindingly bright room, lit by flourescent mosses. It's a huge, verdant garden, in disrepair but still a welcome change from the dank caverns and passages he's been in for days.
As he goes further in, he realizes that the cave is full of animals, playing and chasing each other around. When they see him, they bolt into ruined buildings and vanish out of sight, and he's again alone with the specter of death. But as he sits on a rock in despair, they gradually poke their heads out and go back to their business.
This was originally just a single guitar part. When I sat down today to record it, all the other parts sort of materialized and it surprised me with its richness.
