Story Behind the Song
My day job has me working in Manhattan's midtown area at an advertising firm. As a result, I spend a good chunk of my morning and evening commuting with the other drones from new jersey. So i have to take a subway and a train each day, at the beginning and the end. It is one of the most interesting things to watch. Should you ever be in Penn Station around rush hour, you'll see what I mean. People, no matter how tired they might be, will be running (and I mean RUNNING) for trains to get home. I have noticed many times different street/homeless people hanging around panhandling or performing for money and food. However, for a couple of weeks, there was an old man who would stand by the side shouting at the commuters, encouraging them to be better human beings. I thought that the message was incredible, and even more so coming from this man, who above all else, was trying to teach the commuters. He wasn't asking for donations or food. He wasn't asking of anyone. He was simply offering words of wisdom. Many people probably ignored him, but I certainly did not. His presence and his words made me truly think about the ways that we take for granted the simplest of things, and how it often those with less than us that remind us of our shortcomings.
Lyrics
There's an old man at the station who sits everyday
Calling out to the people passing by
He is preaching salvation and peace on this earth
He is praying for the souls lost in time
And the people do walk on and never do stop
To listen to the old man as he speaks
Maybe some throw their pennies so they will not feel his stare
They can wipe his image from their memory
But the man has a history
But it's he who only knows
Not asking for your pity or your money
Just you listen
Just that you listen
So the words go unheard from the old man at the station
Who sits in the same spot everyday
But there will come a time when his words will cease to flow
And the halls will ring the echoes of his fame
As the old man at the station
Who sat everyday
Preaching for the people he was trying to save
