    Story Behind the Song
This song is the first real song I ever wrote. I wrote it my freshman year in college, in response to a very close friend leaving me to go to college in another state. It was pretty hard for me to imagine that he wouldn't be around or close enough that I could see him, and looking back, I can really see a lot of the rawness of my worry in the lyrics and the tune of the song. I started playing it for my friends, and they thought it was great. The interesting part was that each person I played it for found a different and meaningful interpretation from it, and that was the biggest compliment to me: that I could write a song that could be that universal.

    Lyrics
    I watched you ride away
On the train at half past two
    Only wishing that I knew
Where your road was leading you
In my dreams and my thoughts
    You will always be wandering
    Til your road
    Leads you back home

I didn't need a last chance to hold you
But not because I did not care
We didn't spend our last times together
Wondering what it would be like with you not here
In my eyes you can see the love for you
    Burning in my soul
And that is why I hold your candle
Til your road leads you back home

It's been years if I have lived them
But these years have gone like days
Heaven help me if I'm foolish
Thinking you'll be back this way
Then at ten minutes past midnight
    I heard the telephone
Come pick me up at the station
My road's led me back home

Well the journey has been so long
    But you're finally back home
And all the tears i cried for sorrow
All are now the tears of joy
Now with you I can be happy
And with you I will grow old
Cuz the road you took so far away
    Has brought you back home
The road you took so long ago
Brought you back to my arms
