The tale of the Kitty on the Lewis and Clark Expedition
    CD: Americans Rivers and Roads
    Credits: Song by DKGrant

    Story Behind the Song
while in Omaha I visited the office of the Army Corps of Engineers. In their lobby they had a reprint of a black cat on a canoe - "Fur traders descending the Missouri" by George Caleb Bingham. There was a story there, so I found it.

    Lyrics
    Kitty Conquers the West

    C
    Black cat on the Missouri
    Am
    Wonders what you’ll find
    F7
West with the Corps of Discovery
    G
    Maybe better times

    Leaving old St. Louis
    Upriver to the Mandan
Your nose is all a twitching
There’s sturgeon in the frying pan

    Dm
    Mr. Mountain Kitty
    Am
    Conquering the West
    Dm
    On a great adventure
That will put you to the test

    Deep in the Bitterroot Mountains
Leaving paw prints in the snow
    Searching for Shoshone
On the trail from the Buffalo

    Nuzzling Sacagawea
When her tears began to flow
    Your purring reassured her
    When she had to go

    Mr. Mountain Kitty
    Conquering the West
    When it comes to friendship
    You were very blessed

    Roll on Columbia, Roll on
    Black cat and Charbonneau
    Blazing the path of discovery
    Where fat cats never go

    Living in kitty heaven
    Salmon left and right
While the army chewed on doggies
You were getting fat and feeling right

    Mr. Mountain Kitty
    Conquering the West
    A belly full of Coho
    Take time to digest

    The gateway to the Pacific
Was a gray and dismal sight
    Whale, fish and elk meat
    Cruzet’s fiddle eased the night

It’s been a long, long journey
For a curious kitty on the roam
    Oregon’s very tempting
There’s no food like this at home

    Mr. Mountain Kitty
    Conquering the West
    When the going got tough
You put the tough all to the test

    Kitty thought of staying
But a grizzly came in view
    Straight a great sequoia
    Then jumped in a canoe

So he went home with Clark and Lewis
    And sits on a windowsill
    He’s had a great adventure
    That few critters ever will

    Mr. Mountain Kitty
    Conquering the West
    All the other critters
    Tell me you’re the best
