Story Behind the Song
In 2001 and 2002, I had the honor of being the Entertainment Chairperson and luminary singer for the Sonoma County, California branch of The American Cancer’s Society Relay for Life Event. In 2002, I decided I would write a piece to perform at the luminary ceremony.
I was doubting my ability and having a difficult time writing it--there were a lot of cross-outs. Then I said a prayer to ask for help with the song. After while, I picked up the mess which was supposed to produce an important song . To my surprise, there--in-between the cross-outs--WAS the song.!
I called my friend, pianist, Michael Heinzsch to help me arrange it and accompany me for the event. He was to be out of town for the weekend it was to be held. However, we sat down and got it arranged, and he went home and laid down the beautiful background tracks on CD so that I could use it as accompaniment in his absence.
This year, am in a new State and don’t know many musicians as of yet, so I don’t feel that I would be a good Entertainment director at this time. I am high-risk for breast cancer. My mother, Marion died in 1981 at the age of 54 from this disease. I have lost others very close to me to cancer, so this is a cause very close to my heart. I knew I had to figure out something to do this year to aid in the fight against cancer. So, I decided to have my vocal track recorded with Michael’s keyboards and put it up on MP3.com. I am pledging the money I make on plays to the American Cancer Society.
Lyrics
Hope
Is what we cannot give up on
It’s what we must instill
In each other
Our brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers
Hope
To persevere and believe
That the answer…is near
It’s just around the corner
And hope
We all grow stronger in numbers
Let’s give Cancer a face
And let it be the face of hope
--piano solo--
Bridge:
Draw strength
In the memories they gave us
Lessons of courage they taught us
Our brothers, sisters , fathers, mothers
Wives and husbands
Friends and lovers
Love
Is what our hearts must be full of
As we pay tribute tonight
Let us surround them with light
And work
To learn and grow from the knowledge
More will survive
When your hearts abide…
In Hope
We all grow stronger in numbers
Let’s give Cancer a face
And let it be
The face of hope
