Story Behind the Song
The David Adler Cultural Center is a small folk-music venue, music school and cultural arts center located in Libertyville, Illinos which resides in the former home of renowned architect David Adler and his wife Katherine Keith. Local mythology suggests that her ghost still roams the halls of the Adler home, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Though she died in Europe, her remains are buried on the grounds of the Adler estate in Libertyville.
I was responsible for booking and hosting folk concerts at the David Adler Cultural Center in the years 2000 through 2002. Despite its twenty-six year legacy as a fantastic venue for acoustic folk music, the director of the Adler Center has been successful in alienating the entire folk music community of Northern Illinois. This song was written in response to her careless and irresponsible abuse of the people that created a wonderful legacy of folk music in the historic David Adler home.Ş
Lyrics
twice a month i dim the lights
i raise em once i dim them twice
puttin' on a show for the ghost of mrs adler
comin' in from all aroun'
some drive for miles to our small town
and put on a show for the ghost of mrs adler
seventy-one years ago she took a step off this mortal coil
and walked into our town’s mythology
her husband he built most of this house
23 rooms north to south
a place to put on shows for all to see
a time it comes time it goes
where and how just can't be known
we're just puttin' on a show for the ghost of mrs adler
dressed up in our sunday best
we learn the lesson we take the test
puttin' on a show for the ghost of mrs adler
the song its call is far and wide
we choose the lives that we decide
puttin' on a show for the ghost of mrs adler
people come and people go, the boards they creak, house covered with snow
how long will we go on, puttin' on shows for the ghost of mrs adler
we can shout and we can sing, we can beat the drum and pick the strings, tap out a tune on the old piano
if music can't bring harmony, the worst that befalls you and me
no more shows for the ghost of mrs adler
one of these days, if we don't get along, she'll be there, we'll be long gone
silence will fill the home of mrs adler
but that ain't how it's got to be, it all depends on you and me, let’s fill her home, make some noise, clap your hands girls and boys, we're puttin' on a show for the ghost of mrs adlerr
