Singing is, quite literally, broken air. This song is about how hard it is to find a place inside you that lets you sing. |
CD: monkey tunes
Credits: Written and played by Phil Russell, backing vocals by Michael Walker, Flute by Kim Gregory. |
Story Behind the Song
I got the idea for this song listening to a programme on radio 4 about the origins of song. I liked the description of singing as just being broken air. It seemed a simple notion for something that seems so difficult to do. Because I work with people using song as a road to health, and because of my own less than beautiful voice, I know how hard this can be - I get tongue-tied, I get scared. But when you do open up, it's a marvellous thing. Bedroom recording again, guitar/vocals, then add harmony and flute. Played live we use a conga to emphasise the heartbeat, but it didn't seem necessary here.
Lyrics
Broken Air
Take this broken air
Find a place in there
Find a place inside
That isn’t sad, that isn’t tired
Take this bullfrog roar
This monkey yell, this closing door
Take this tiny scream
The sound of something waiting to be seen
I get tongue-tied
I get small
I get silent
When I hear your call
Take this beating heart
Find a place to start
Find a place in there
That isn’t scared, that doesn’t care
The soldiers breaking step
The little secrets we have kept
Take this tiny sound
For it is something waiting to be found
