Story Behind the Song
Written in the midst of starting a new relationship, being honest about the struggle as well as the pleasure. It wrote itself over a couple of days. Recording it involved getting the basic guitar/vocal track down then overdubbing the harmonies,
Lyrics
We do what we do
Don’t you ever wonder why I keep talking to myself
Like I’m trying to get some sense in here?
There isn’t anything I say makes a difference to the way
I keep treating you
This ain’t no halfway desire
Baptism only come with fire, oh baby
Please take me just the way I am,
and we’ll do what we do, what we do, what we do, what we do.
Just a little thing you say, did you mean it that way?
I see you slip away
Just a little thing you do and it’s plain, it’s plain as day
You’ll soon be on your way
Now I can see you we can start
Now that we’ve started we might part, oh baby
Please take me just the way I am,
and we’ll do what we do, what we do, what we do, what we do.
In the quiet of the night we are picking at the bones
And we both know we’re to blame
How can two such ugly souls be as beautiful as this?
Heaven only knows
This ain’t no halfway desire
Baptism only come with fire,
We sing peculiar tune
We marry under the moon, oh baby
Please take me just the way I am,
and we’ll do what we do, what we do, what we do, what we do.
