Though I believe this to truly be my best work yet, it is with a sad heart that I release this song. On February 6th, 2002, Rony Tiomkin of Ariel, Israel died. He was a good friend of mine, and I am very sad to see him go. This song is dedicated to him.

    Story Behind the Song
I actually began writing this song before I found out about Rony's death. Only the first four minutes had been completed, so I radically changed the song towards a different direction. I had written a poem in memory of him, and so I felt it appropriate to include it in the song. There was a tremendous amount of work I had to go through to get all the vocal effects completed and mixed in with the synths in the center section, but I think the end product would have made him proud--even if he didn't like the style necessarily. The last section in particular is very representative of the emotions I was feeling in response to his death. I still don't think that it has entirely hit me yet, and I don't know when it will. Other than the vocals, the guitar sections were also extremely time-consuming to complete, as I actually re-recorded them to match the drum rhythms for the first time. They're not perfect, but you'll hopefully notice that the drums are actually on time for the most part here. I think that overall this song definitely has much better production quality than what I've previously done (as would be expected, I learn as I go) and far more attention to detail. Anyway, as far as the poem goes, it is largely left open to interpretation. There is a lot of heavy symbolism, but I think that much of it is personal, and those who knew him will probably pick up on some of it. If there was one wish that I could have, it would be that he could hear the song, but that cannot be granted. It was very emotionally draining and healing at the same time for me to go through the process of producing the song, and hopefully it can have some of the same affectation on the listener as well. Goodbye Rony, you'll be sorely missed...

    Darkness
    -----------
    by: Kevin M. Beals
Dedicated to the memory of Rony Tiomkin
    -----------

    Words were spoken
    Words were forgotten
    Nothing could erase the permanency
    And nothing was guaranteed

    The tears stained the earth
Soaked up in her dirty hands
She called him to her bosom
    From whence he came

As darkness fell upon that weary brow
    Not a head was bowed
    An eye averted low
As morning came the realization fell
    If there was return
It was far too late to tell
    ...here is where words fail

The death of innocence occurred long before this
    Trailing behind in the stream
    A ripple upon the water
He placed his hand in willingly
    Aware of some other reality
    Yet none was guaranteed
    Betrayed by no god
    And betrayed by no man
Fate cast his long arm far
And drew forth the shortest straw

    A cry rose up
    And was left unanswered
    Cold and cruel it seemed
But such is the bitter cup

Nineteen times the cock crowed twice
    Rings of light twisting about
    As a soul rose up
    His final adventure now embarked

    The great unknown
    Sang a siren song
His wry smile answered in return
    To the seed unsown
He turned back and looked behind
Yet those watching could not see
And smiled again a childish grin
"If you knew you'd wish you were me"

    With that he departed
    Never to return
    Never to be forgotten
    Though they would still yearn

A glitter on the morning dew
    Revealed another world
    Opaque to the naked eye
    Another play unfurled

    Grasping at unseen mystery
    With unseen open hands
    Spilling forth no history
    Awash in distant lands
