My friend, drummer Sherman Ferguson, was Pat Martino's sideman back in the Philly days, when Pat was tearin' it up and hanging with Wes Montgomery and charting a new course for jazz guitar. This tune is my combination portrait and present to him, and I think that the chorus especially catches the beautiful but angular and unpredictable nature of his playing. I sent two CDs of it to Pat's manager recently (early 2003) and he dug it, and sent one along to Pat. I will ask Pat in person if he's listened to it yet, because in early March Sherman will be sitting in with Pat in an L.A. show. What a treat! |
