"Law of Averages" puts its finger on the contradictions of existence with a strong nod to Bowie's "Five Years".
    CD: Earthbound   Label: Shur Records
Credits: All instruments and vocals performed by Alice Bierhorst

    Story Behind the Song
This song arose from a sense of wonder at the endless changes we put ourselves through. It also survived many years in the can before emerging on February 2003's "Earthbound", Bierhorst's entirely self-performed and self-recorded sixth CD.

    Lyrics
I'm breaking the law of averages
The one that denies we're all infinite
A long roll of tape with flies stuck in it
    Spoiling the ointment of happiness

I'm breaking the surface that we tend with care
    Underneath something we don't dare
    Disturb from its slumber
    Release into the air

    CHORUS
Peace on Earth will be delayed again

    I'm looking over my shoulder
    Surveying the places I've been
I know that as I grow older
I'll long to see them again

I'm breaking the law of averages
The one that condemns us to repeat
    The same mistakes
    Again and again

    CHORUS

I get down on my knees and I pray for a blank slate
The kind where dirty words can't accumulate
    The kind that you never
    Have to wipe clean

    CHORUS

And if you don't know by now
    You'll never see the day

    CHORUS
