Story Behind the Song
The motivation for this song was Troy Shadley's cousin Johanna Shelnutt. Her father took his own life and she blamed herself. Troy sat down and wrote the lyrics in an attempt to cheer her up. The music came a couple of weeks later when Troy was playing guitar with his sister in law. "She had this little riff and I thought it was really cool, so I asked what it was and she said nothing special." I asked if I could use the riff (which would become the intro lick) and the song just kind of wrote itself. It was written mostly in my bedroom and I took it to band rehearsal the next week. It took about two hours to record and about two takes. We didn't know much about recording so it was kind of done "live". It's a very special song to us and people seem to like it wherever we play it."
Lyrics
Oh Johanna can't you see,
What you've done to me,
Nothin's what you thought it'd be,
In the night, in the night,
Cold and lonely,
You look into the sky,
Tears run down onto your lips,
And mar your smile,
Chorus...
Oh Johanna can't you see,
Everything's alright, alright,
Oh Johanna don't you cry,
Everythings alright, alright,
Every once and awhile you think,
Maybe it's your fault,
Desperation in the night,
Brings you more tears, oh more tears,
Every night you look into the sky,
Tears fall down onto your lips,
And mar your smile,
Chorus...
Turnaround...
Screaming into the darkness and fear every night,
Oh Johanna don't you lose your will to fight,
Guitar solo...
Chorus...
