CD: Death is a Funny Thing
Credits: Composed by William Forbis, Robert Gryphon and Shaun Lipkind. Arranged and produced by Robert Gryphon. Performed by William Forbis (rhythm guitar, guitar solos and licks, some bass) and Robert Gryphon (vocals, guitar solos and licks, keyboards, most bass). |
Story Behind the Song
Gryphon: Forbis wrote this song more than ten years ago in his bathtub, ostensibly due to the acoustics, according to him. At that time Shaun Lipkind received a mono tape of it as a single acoustic guitar and vocal line song. I found him recording a keyboard-only version of it, and we started over with a much more complex 7-track arrangement. Forbis was blown away by the result. This version, recorded with present technology, takes this soulful material even further.
Lyrics
Lyrics by William Forbis
I was born an old man--I will die a new.
Break open the casket; I'm comin' through.
I know this thing wasn't made for me.
I was born a wise man--will I die a fool?
We never meet those who rule.
I think it's time I was on my way.
I was born scarred--in death I heal.
Maybe you can tell me what I no longer feel.
I think it's time I went back to the womb...
Oh, yeah. Real soon.
I was born a dead man! Will I die alive?
These words you tell me, I know they're lies.
I know this life wasn't meant for me.
Goodbye.
