Story Behind the Song
Watching an old TV program with Tennessee Ernie Ford on it talking about the farm and chickens.
Lyrics
It started out like a usual night, around the kitchen table
Just Ma and me and Emily and an empty spot for Pop.
When he didn't show, that wasn't strange, Pop did that quite often. Later Ma said, "Yous got to bed" and I'll be up there soon.
Near midnight, full moonlight, we heard Pop's Chevrolet. He stumbled in and opened the fridge, without a word to say, he started Chokin', chokin' on a chicken bone, yeah he was chokin', what a way to go now Pop was chokin' chokin' on a chicken bone.. now Pop don't come home... he choked on a chicken bone.
Well we buried Pop up on the hill in a plain old box and stone.. and the town folk say, "hey, didn't your pop choke on a chicken bone?" yeah, he was chokin' etc
