    Story Behind the Song
The remixed version of “The Day of the Budgie” in its intended uninterrupted format. It is over 25 minutes but well worth the download. Since its release on MP3.com the suite has enjoyed considerable attention with the possibility of adaptation to stage play and ice extravaganza!
Egg. The opening track of the now legendary concept album "The Day of the Budgie" Recorded in 1981 the concept was innovative at the time but sadly much copied at the time of this writing. Indeed the Scandinavians took the avarian psychotic murdering violent butcher concept to extremes...who can forget "F**k me! That Parrot's Mental!" and "The chop-off-yer-goolis Bird" by MALLET!
Bad Budgie. Part 2 of "The Day of the Budgie" album. The track finds the albums hero "Beefa" Budgie as a bit of a wild one, untamed and a bit cross with everyone...sort of teenage thing, like "My Generation" but not as good.
Part 3, Budgerina offers the love interest for our Hero/anti-hero. She is the one who has tamed him and opened his eyes to love, fields of flowers, raindrops on roses, soft woolen mittens...that kind of thing. Anyway, she dosen't last long as she's eaten by a cat by the end of the song.
Part 4. The instrumental with no name, is just that. Mid point in the album for making a cup of tea or grabbing a beer from the fridge without missing some of the side splitting lyrics.
At this point I may as well let you know a little more the writing and recording process of the album. Work started one night in the Pub, "The Canary" on Plodder Lane, Farnworth. The idea was sketched out, a few lyrics written. The following day was more writing and rehearsal, followed by a trip down the pub, The Brooklyn I think. The third day everything was recorded and finished by tea time. Then nothing happened for 20 years until Steve found the tape down the back of a sofa in Yorkshire and Voila! et Voici!
Part 5. Frogs displays the vocal talents of Andy and Steve. The track is more of a diatribe really but has some pretty good moments; I've always liked the bit where after Beefa has thrown himself into the cold murky depths of the cold murky deep canal, he is saved by "mouth to beak resuscitation" by the frogs
Part 6. Catkiller. Beefa takes revenge on the cat community for the brutal murder of his girlfriend Budgerina.
This is perhaps the best track of the album, it certainly has an extraordinary vocal performance This is the all time classic of all time "Catkiller" Lets Rock!
Part 7. Bullworker Budgie. After the blood lust & indiscriminate butchery of "Catkiller" Beefa's thirst for revenge is far from satisfied. He has developed into a megalomaniac psychotic loony mad bastard! He starts body building and with increased strength and nuclear capability is set to take on the whole world!!
(note. whilst the song is not explicit in Beefa's possession of weapons of mass destruction it does sort of help things along into the next bit if you accept his nuclear arsenal as given)
Incidentally, this song started life way back in about 1978/79 as "Mr. Bellings Handometric Temperature Conversion Chart" This original outing for the tune was a little slower and in a 6/8 time signature. This track can be found on the "Beautiful Ballads" album.
Part 8. The final episode in Beefa's journey. Apocalypse! The last battle between good and evil before the Day of Judgement! Beefa the Beast! 666! Armageddon!!!!

Will the meek inherit the Earth? Are you bothered?
You'll have to wait and see.

That's it. The whole thing was done in 3 days in Andy's bedroom back in 1981 when we were 17 or 18. The whole thing is full of compromise, bum notes, mistakes, missing sections but overall a lot of fun and a lot of laughing.

Hope you enjoy it as much as we did back then.

    Lyrics
    Bad Budgie
Can't remember them all but I do like
"don't look at me in the wrong way, or you'll end up in a band-aid."

    Budgerina, so nice and lovely....
    etc. etc. etc,
finishing with "...nothing will cause us to part, except perhaps a big a cat.
That will come along one day, and bite your head off".

    Catkiller
"I'll cut their cake with my knife" is a particular favourite, plagarised shamelessly from AC/DC I think.
I'm going to build up all my muscles
I'm going to build up all my strength
Until I am enormous, bigger than a bus.

    Bullworker Budgie
I'm going to rip off you ears
I'm going to poke your eyes out
I'm going to pull you head down to your knees
And then I'm going to kill you.

    Armageddon
    Contains the classic:
"The Budgies gonna get your eyes, tread on your toes and pull your nose"
    and the immortal line:
"Today is Armageddon 'cos ahm' a gonna' ged on you!"
