Story Behind the Song
First, a big thank you to my son, David, for helping me sing this song. My niece, Amy, mother of Sophie, shared this story with me. She said she and her husband had thought how there were places they wanted to see and things they wanted to do before becoming parents. After it didn't work out that way, she came to this realization. The joy of experiencing new places and things is greatly multiplied by having a little one, who is just discovering the world, to show it all to.
Lyrics
WE DIDN'T KNOW
By Linda McKeeth © 11/3/02
When we were going to be married,
We thought we'd put off having a family.
So many things to do and places to see.
We didn't know.
We just didn't know.
Chorus:
We didn't know how green the grass was.
We didn't know how blue the sky was.
We didn't know how slow a lady bug walks,
Or notice dandelions and buttercups,
Till we showed our world to Sophie.
But Someone had a plan better than we.
And soon we found ourselves parents-to-be.
A baby girl was born, we named Sophie.
We didn't know.
We just didn't know.
Chorus
When we go to the places we wanted to see.
Share them with each other but more amazingly,
We get to show our world to our little Sophie.
We didn't know.
We just didn't know.
Chorus
The other day when we were at a party,
We overheard a bride and a groom-to-be
Say they were putting off having a family.
They just don't know.
Like we just didn't know.
Chorus
