CD: Late Bloomer MEOD 003   Label: MEO Media Arts
Credits: Lyrics by Brian O Doherty. Guitar - Doug Leftwich

    Story Behind the Song
I was walking along a snow covered street in
Waukesha, Wisconsin many years ago when this
melody hit me. I carried it with me for years adding the first version of lyrics sometime later. One day my friend Brian heard a cassette of it and thought it was the best thing I'd ever done. He asked if he could write new words and I said "Sure!"

Later we almost got Ringo to record it but
complications arose by the name of Nils
Lofgren. Brian was able to place two other
songs on the Ringo album 'Time Takes Time'
including the wonderful 'Weight Of The World'.

I recorded several versions of this one but
this is take one of the remake with Doug.

    Lyrics
When we were young, way back when
We used to be the best of friends.
We'd run and play out in the sun
And talk all night when the day was done.
We'd fuss and fight like children do
But I don't remember being mean to you.
You'd laugh at me and call me names
    We're grown-ups now
But it's the same old thing.

Sticks and stones may break my bones,
But your words are going to break my heart.
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But your words are tearing me apart.

Like little boys and little girls
In daddy's shoes and mama's pearls.
When we try to make ammends
We're not as big as we pretend.
With all my flaws, stitches and seams.
You say I'm still the man of your dreams.
How could that be? I ask you how.
You say your dreams are only nightmares now.

Sticks and stones may break my bones
But your words are going to break my heart.
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But your words are tearing me apart.

    Your pickin' and pokin'
Got me chicken and a chokin'
    Baby I'm afraid to breathe!
Why must you taunt me so?
'Cuz if you really want to know...

Sticks and stones may break my bones
But your words are going to break my heart.
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But your words are tearing me apart.
