Story Behind the Song
I love ragtime music and I just wondered what style had given birth to it. My research led me to the polka, which had been the most popular dance of the 1830's and 1840's. Around 1850 this variation on the polka appeared in America, the "Quick-Step", which around 1890 developed into the "Two-Step" and "Ragtime". Some of the earliest rags are actually described as a "Two-Step Rag". A close listening to "Fi,I,I" will reveal some of the characteristic themes that were later incorporated into "Ragtime".
