Story Behind the Song
This is one of the songs on the record that confronts the human cost of media hype and oversaturation. Mark wrote the verses, David wrote the choruses, and Nigel and Alan helped glue it all together. We recorded the album at Triad Studios, Redmond, WA.
Lyrics
Starmap
I saw you on the big screen, you were looking back at me
You said you’d always love him, and I saw my hopes go dim
What is it worth to you, to keep the sharks at bay?
The sidewalk fits the handprints, but it’s better when it’s all in my head
Put the top down, doesn’t help me read these red and yellow lines
And the whitewalls flashing mansion after mansion in the sky
check the marquee
My boardwalk found a starmap, to a sparkle-spattered lens
These hills have constellations, full of all your friends
And I’m drawn in toward the lights, flying straight into the heat of the sun
My wings of wax can take it, ‘cause I love to watch you fake it
Put the top down, doesn’t help me read these red and yellow lines
And the whitewalls flashing mansion after mansion in the sky
From the marquee, to the gutter
Long ago we started something, and you cast your spells, but where are they now?
Put the top down, doesn’t help me read these red and yellow lines
And the whitewalls flashing mansion after mansion in the sky
From the valley
To the marquee
To the gutter
