    Story Behind the Song
Varick St. – A crunchy blues song with a horn section over the chorus. The vocals get gutsier and grittier. A wailing guitar solo played over the verse chords leads the listener on a good groove out of the song. The vocals lament the city’s way of passing us around and pushing us through a maze. (This song was written at 3:30 am on Varick Street in New York City while sitting traffic waiting to get into the Holland Tunnel after leaving a cinqo de mayo party (2001) on the West side.)

    Lyrics
    E7 – D#7- D7 –G – G# - A

    Verse 1:
    My hope is evaporating
Like the frost across my windshield
    The traffic crawls around me
    And everyone refuses to yield
    A woman pulls alongside me
But she don’t dare to meet my eyes

    Chorus 1:
    And the horns they verbalize
    All the captured frustration
    And we fail to realize
    that this is our civilization

    Here on varick street….

    Verse 2:
I watch the people on the street
They have eyes that always look down
With a sidewalk for a future
And the streets just pass us around
And were all runnin through the maze
And were all punching out our days

    Chorus 2:
    And the buildings…oh the buildings
    Set in steel and stone
And these buildings like solid prisons
    Chill me to the bone

    Here on Varick Street

    Verse 3:
    And when I look forward
I just forget where I came from
And when I check my mirror
I lose focus on what’s to come

    Verse 4:
And there’s a man who looks like Jesus
In the Lexus next to me
    Seems like there’s no salvation
    Left on varick street
    No no no salvation
    Left on varick street

    Chorus 1:
    And the horns they verbalize
    All the captured frustration
    And we fail to realize
Is this is our made up civilization

    Here on varick street….
