    Story Behind the Song
This song was written after a long time liking a girl I shouldn't have. It's about loss and about love and about random thoughts.

    Lyrics
    (verse 1)
If I pictured a princess then
    You’d be her handmaiden
    Picking up after like
    Salt in the jam
You don’t know that it’s there
And you don’t want to know
    Cause that’s gross

If I pictured your stream of thought
    I’d see a haircut
    That’s shorn on the left
And left long on the right
Like you wanted to try something new
And it didn’t turn out quite right

    (chorus)
And if I’ll be your Waste Land
    Then you be my Eliot
    J. Alfred Prufrock
    And all that that means
    And all of these things
    That we say we believe
And if you’ll be my spaceman
    Then I’ll be your Challenger
    Blown up when all
That we wanted was moon rocks
    And a couple of pictures
Of Mom and the kids from up there

    (verse 2)
    If you were the president
    I’d give you good advice
Like what you should sell them
    And who you should bomb
    Like those stupid militias
Where do they think they get off?

    If you were the post-card
Then I’d be the postage stamp
    Licked and then fastened
    And sent in the mail
    Just to get to oblivion
With some of that glue holding firm

    (repeat chorus)

    (verse 3; end)
    If I pictured your face
    I’d see roses and hyacinths
    Rare blooming beauty
    Like everyone said I’d get
    Us and our parents
And we would become them in time

    If I pictured you laughing
I’d see it like pouring rain
    Over the ashes of
    Time-tempered fires
That I’ve let go on way way
    Way way way too long
