My friend has this deal where he used to go out and smoke cigarettes and drink coffee for breakfast. He called it the Breakfast of Champions. I thought that it was a fitting title.

Story Behind the Song
Originally this song was going to be titled Portrait of an American Family and it was going to have a verse about each family member. One about the drunk husband, one about the adulterous wife, one about the bulemic daughter, and one about the suicidal son. Well..the first verse is about the dad and his progression through addictions and habits. I also had the typical high school male in mind. The second verse is about a girl who (in my mind) is bulemic, but the lyrics don't really convey that. Basically she's a girl who feels alone and tries to surround herself with people to bring herself comfort. In doing this she loses a bit of herself. The third verse is kind of an exaggerated version of me. The 3rd "chorus" is poking fun at myself. I wear my influences on my sleeve and I wish I didn't. The last line in the chorus is a total tongue-in-cheek self loathing bit. Its meant to be laughed at, not cried over.
The coda is where (I believe) it comes together. Overall the song is about the addictions and "medicines" that plague us. The coda just states what is wrong with these 3 people.
If you want the (non-mp3.com version of) the cd email me.

Lyrics
[hold up your head / catch your tears / there’s no need to cry / everything will be alright]
a cup of Coffee in the morning to get you out of bed
three Aspirin in the evening to take care of your head
a Drink or two will save your soul and make you into a man
a Needle in your arm to cure your shaking hands
this is how the story goes
it repeats in a circle
the Pills, the Kids, a Cheating Spouse
and Dinner on the Table
i wish that i could understand it all
amy always said that her life’s an open book
with pages torn, lines crossed out, and notes she wished she took
she’s the kind of girl who keep the boys awake at night
turn out the lights, roll into bed, and kiss away the fright
seventeen, a drama queen
or so her Parents told her
a young girl in a Grown Up World
but she feels a bit older
sometimes it just don’t make no sense at all
lately i’ve been doubting all the things that i believe
these People that surround me and all the Books i read
i’m growing up i’m growing tired of all the Games we play
see He Who Fights and Runs Away just dies another day
a Stolen Line and Broken Heart
does not a poet make
pull me out i’m drowning now
i’ve made a big mistake
so this is what it’s like to lose your soul
it’s Progress so you’d better make way
our Medicine will keep you safe
from all the Fears that haunt you at night
and all the Years of a wasted life
and all the Thoughts spinning in your head
and all the Dreams asleep in your bed
[hold up your head / catch your tears / there’s no need to cry/ everything will be all right]
