Story Behind the Song
The lyrics were made up "on the fly" as it
was being sung for the first time. This is a silly song about a man who, seeking forgiveness for unspecified ill deeds, joins the Moonies.
Lyrics
Johnny went the corner store one dark and rainy night
A man with a gun came in and said everything's alright
Just put your hands in the air and give me all your cash
Johnny did what he was told and his life took a crash
He's at the airport now and he's selling roses cheap
Asking for the Lord's forgiveness for all the things he did
Don't you know he thinks that he is on the path to the right
But heaven's door is not open wide
Jainy's in her room all cosy, sweet, and high
Thinking about the world outside and how her money's tight
She's driving a brand new car and she's thinking she's real smart
The drugs she did last night ain't gonna get her far
She's at the airport now and she's selling roses cheap
Asking for the Lord's forgiveness for all the things she did
Don't you know she thinks that she is on the path to the right
But heaven's door is not open wide
Oh
Fifteen years go by and they're both still alone
The hair shaved off, the money gone, with nowhere to call home
A Grand Jury indicts the man for all he's done
A false religion, a false god, something must be done
There'll be no more asking for forgiveness from his hand
But your God looks down and shakes his head in wonder
What's gonna come tonight
What's gonna come tonight
'Cause the door,'cause the door, 'cause the door
Is open wide
