Come Dance With Me is an exercise in vocal flexibility. With fast words and phrases and pleasantly unpredictable melodic lines and chords, it is a formidable achievement to perform. It is intended to be performed a cappella. The piece looks back to the bebop era of vocal jazz and pays tribute to Miles Davis, whose recording of "So What" on "Kind of Blue" inspired the introduction. It is technically demanding, rhythmically exciting, and it tells a story which allows the chorus to be slightly re-interpreted each time it is sung. There are currently two groups in the process of learning the piece, but neither is prepared to make a recording yet. This is a piano reduction of the vocal parts.

Lyrics
It was a cool December evening,
the moon was riding high.
I could taste the electricity
in the air as I drove by.
It was an unobtrusive jazz club,
the neons shining bright,
but the music seeping through the walls
called with all its might:
CHORUS:
Come dance with me, won’t you come dance with me?
You’ve got to admit there’s not a better time.
The band is hot and the floor is jumpin’,
you’ve got to come and give it a try.
Just let your body loose and the music move you onto the floor,
there’s not a single thing to worry about.
I know you want to dance and I can see you want to dance
so come on over here and try it out.
I walked through the door and the music hit me,
the saxophone was screamin’ it’s song.
Although the music was good I had places to be,
I decided that I wouldn’t stay long.
I took a place on the wall and I watched them dance,
I saw a beautiful guy dancing away.
He was smooth, he was good, he had life in his feet.
I wanted him to come on over and say:
CHORUS
I sat by myself and I watched him dance
with more style and grace than I’d ever seen.
I wanted to dance but I was too shy to ask
so I stood up and I started to leave.
But then he noticed me up against the wall,
I couldn’t help but stop to wonder why.
He said “It’s illegal not to dance here”
and grabbed my hand with a twinkle in his eye.
And we danced….
