Story Behind the Song
In the weeks and months after 9/11, there was an overwhelming sense of sympathy and love for New York City. Amongst certain New Yorkers (myself included), there was also a kind of weird fondness for things that ordinarily would have been considered unseemly (kamikaze cab drivers, crappy subway musicians, annoying panhandlers). These things became not only mildly tolerable, but even romantic, as if to say, "Oh, look, two cabbies are cursing at each other; I guess things are getting back to normal - back to the NYC we know and love. So that's what this "love" song is about.
Lyrics
I don't even mind the shit talkers
and the junkies on 8th Avenue.
The shady street merchants hustling for another purchase don't upset my view.
NY Post readers seem a little less
like cretins on this fine, fine day.
In this feel-good spirit, I might even change that lyric cause it's mean to say.
Funny how a little thing called love
can make it all seem clear.
turn your mind from doubt and fear
Funny how a little thing called love
can make it all seem clear.
The guy in the subway sayin' Jesus still loves me, he don't bother me.
The pushy panhandler searchin' for an easy fix he earns my sympathy.
The violin players out of tune again
but now it strikes a chord inside.
When the throng of foes conspires to steal my soul I ain't gonna run and hide.
Funny how a little thing like love
can make you overcome
judgin' only right from wrong.
Funny how a little thing called love
can make you overcome.
