Story Behind the Song
The Gradstock Guys wanted to write one original song to include in their Gradstock 2002 set, which was otherwise made up entirely of covers. Luke showed Aaron a song idea he had come up with two years ago. It was the chorus for a song titled 'Rock 'n' Roll Safari.' With that title in mind, Luke and Jeremy set about to write the music while Aaron sat in and wrote the lyrics. The basic song was completed in about twenty minutes, lyrics and all. It was later brought to Kevin, who helped polish the song.
The recorded version of 'Rock 'n' Roll Safari' is far different than the version heard at Gradstock 2002. The night before the Gradstock Guys went in to record the song, the pre-chorus' were added. Prior to that, many changes had been made to the song's overall structure. The changes definitely made 'Rock 'n' Roll Safari' a better song.
"'Rock 'n' Roll Safari' is a straight up rock song, meant to be taken with a grain of salt. Though we worked hard on the music, the lyrics are nonsensical. Are only goals in writing and recording the song were to make 1) something that our friends would enjoy, 2) something that we would enjoy, and 3) something that would rock. In my opinion, the song does just that." -Aaron
'Rock 'n' Roll Safari' was recorded and mixed by Darryl Neustaedter-Barg at his studio, DNB Recordings, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in January of 2003.
Lyrics
Into the wild I go
It's the only place I know
I see the eruption of Mt. Mazama
My guitar wants to kill your mama
In the jungle, in the mighty jungle
The lion sleeps tonight
The sheer volume of our amps
Fill all the kids with fright
Hey you kids, don't be afraid
Welcome to this rock crusade
Let's all go on a rock 'n' roll safari
Gotta spread the rock even to the Kalahari
I put my heart and soul into my guitary
So come on everybody on a rock 'n' roll safari
All these sounds, no words can describe
As I hear the drums of the Indian tribe
See the paint, the paint on their face
Hear the thunder, the thundering bass
Laws of nature, no man shall defy
Too scared to run, too scared to cry
In the jungle, only the strong survive
Listen now to my whammy bar dive
Hey pop star, get outta my way
You can't stop this rock brigade
Let's all go on a rock 'n' roll safari
Gotta spread the rock even to the Kalahari
I put my heart and soul into my guitary
So come on everybody on a rock 'n' roll safari
Unleash the fury, the beast's outta the cage
Rock fills the room with its sonic rage
Relocate the mayhem, I see the beasts prowl
As I grab the microphone and begin to howl
Prey turned to hunter, hunter turned to prey
Wondering if I'll ever see another day
All's quiet now, as I watch the beasts stalk
Look out now, 'cause we're about to rock!
Let's all go on a rock 'n' roll safari
Gotta spread the rock even to the Kalahari
I put my heart and soul into my guitary
So come on everybody on a rock 'n' roll safari
