Story Behind the Song
A couple of decades ago I got the idea for this song, and set about getting it recorded. The session was going well, with the engineer very enthusiastic about the music for the four songs we were putting down. Everything was fine until we started cutting the vocals for this track, which obviously filled the engineer with embarrassment or whatever. He rushed us through the rest of the session, and when he had been persuaded to finally provide us with a (very expensive) mix of the session, not only was a whole song missing (!), but the entire tape was a whole tone sharp! Well, times have surely changed, and maybe a song for America is not as un-cool as it used to be.
Lyrics
I was born an American, the fairest homeland underneath the sun
I thought that Freedom was for everyone, unguarded Freedom doesn't last too long
There's a War Zone there, behind your eyes, between your ears and above your spine
You can tell yourself that it's just the times, you can sell yourself almost any line
Things are changing, left and right, it's hard to see things in black and white
Re-arranging, how can you tell the difference, lies or truth?
Wolves are at your throat, sharks surround your boat, ice is getting thin, it's time to sink or swim
Now it's up to you, just what are you gonna do?
When your back's to the wall, you've gotta stand or you're gonna fall
Immigrants come to America, with study and a vow becoming citizens
Of the greatest land beneath the sun, we are all children of America
There's a War Zone etc.
Freedom was born in America, Liberty shining brighter than the sun
We are all children of America. lovers of Freedom, all Americans
I was born an American
I will die an American
Freedom!
