Story Behind the Song
This was another song that came together in the studio like butter on bread. We recorded it last. It was a relief and a fun song to record. A good way to end the album project. I had been thinking about how co-dependent I may have become in my late 20's. I had always had a girlfriend, but never felt enveloped, that "movie love" that I thought existed. I listen to this song often now and sometimes stand up straighter, sometimes laugh.
Lyrics
Set Me Free
If you’ve ever felt lonely, if you’ve ever fallen apart.
If you ain’t ever felt those feelin’s, I don’t think you ever gave away your heart.
I gave away mine a time or two, but I always seem to get it back.
I’m all right for a little while, but I always seem to dwell on the things I lack.
Sometimes I feel too close to you baby, sometimes I feel I’m rollin’ away.
Sometimes I get that claustrophobic feeling, and I don’t like feelin’ that way.
It’s somethin’ I got deep down inside smothered with love, or whatever
When it gets out I feel it’s about time for a little bit of sunny weather
Why don’t you set me free, let me be and you can stay with me
Don’t walk in front of me, you know I don’t like it that way.
Don’t walk behind me, I don’t like to lead, I might lead you astray.
Walk beside me, lean on me and just be my friend.
I swear to you, you follow these two little rules and I’ll be with you until the very end.
Why don’t you set me free, let me be and you can stay with me
I know I’m not perfect, some things I’d like to change.
But if I do it ain’t gonna be you it’s gonna be me doin’ the rearrangin’.
I might just fly into the wild blue yonder, or ride into the sunset.
You know I’ve met a lot of women who would’ve liked to change me, but I ain’t never found one that can do that yet.
Why don’t you set me free, let me be and you can stay with me
