Story Behind the Song
This song was written in a hotel room in Portland OR, in the states. The idea came by surprise and before I knew what was happening, the words were down and I was working on the arrangement and melody. Later, I recorded it at a mates house in Albuquerque NM, in exchange for a ton of woodwork and here's the result. When I wrote this song, I envisioned the crowded foreshores of the Swan River in Perth, during the Australia Day fireworks display. I really hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Lyrics
Son's and Daughters of a lucky land, let's gather as one - Whatever you do, wherever your from. Its time to celebrate this country we love - Australia, this ones for you. It hasn't always been easy, but you paid the price - when it came to our freedom, you didn't think twice, Yeah and nothin's worth havin, without sacrifice - hard work, blood, sweat and tears.
So here's to Australia, where its great to be free, from the sunburnt red desert to the shining blue sea - And the wild colonial spirit, inside you and me - Happy Birthday Australia, our home, Yeah, Happy birthday Australia, our home
Your another year older and none worse for wear, and you've given so much with much more yet to share. Gifts of great beauty and treasures so rare, and the greatest of these is your heart.
You've got miners and farmers, nurses and teachers, white collar, blue collar, men of the cloth - you've got football players and cricketers, ironmen and olympians - those who have gone where so many would not.
Now your people have gathered, across this great land, men women and children - a vision so grand, while the Southern Cross rises, proudly we stand, on the shores of our great island home
So heres to Australia, where its great to be free, from the sunburnt red desert to the shining blue sea - And the wild colonial spirit, inside you and me - Happy Birthday Australia, our home, Yeah, Happy birthday Australia, our home
Happy birthday Australia, our home.
