“Stop the World”

Softly woken by the sunlight seeping through the glass
Slide out of bed, quick shower, brush my teeth, and then get dressed
Spill the coffee; drop the bagel down three flights of stairs
Taste the freedom of the sunshine in the sweet morning air.
World in pocket passing by the friendly local corner store
Jangling bells as a lanky redhead charges out through the door
Come back here shouts the clerk, furious that he’s been had
Stroll away forced to chuckle, thinking to myself
Chorus:
Not this time – I do not worry
Just soak it up and – watch the world fly by
Nor am I – Inclined to hurry
No place to be right now – on nobody’s clock but mine
Rhythmic rattle of the cans that fill her shopping cart,
Can you spare a dime? she asks- Yeah, sure what was I gonna spend it on?
Turn and two steps later FLASH! White light – too bright to see
Cameras gobbling up some guy who’s stepping from his stretch limousine
(Chorus)
Startled, three feet off the ground, and leveled by the blast
Horns blaring, sirens screaming, giant streaks of red roar past
Wondering was that really needed? I wasn’t in their way.
Heart slowing, followed by the laughter now cause it’s ok
(Chorus)
Brokers stare through storefront windows; eyes locked on the TV screens
Watch from a distance, feel the subway rumble underneath the street
Market up, market down, where did all the money go, oh where
Just smile and shrug my shoulders; fact is that I don’t really care
Chorus:
Not this time – I do not worry
Just soak it up and – watch the world fly by
Nor am I – inclined to hurry
No place to be - someone stop the world
I’d like to get off!!!
